The shape of the evening
Built around a 5:10pm curtain, the most common this season. Yours varies by opera; we confirm from your tickets.
How we prepare
We ask for your tickets, not your guess at the timings; curtain varies from 3:45 to 6:30 depending on the opera. We check the interval length too, and whether you want the picnic done for you or a table in one of the restaurants (they book out weeks ahead; we'll say so honestly).
Hamper confirmed and chilled. Route checked against A22 and A26 roadworks, there are usually some. Wet-weather plan agreed: if the forecast turns, we move your picnic under the covered terrace before you ask.
Your driver stays on site, no disappearing to Lewes. Picnic laid before the interval bell, cleared during the second half, car repositioned to the front of the exit queue by the final scene.
Honestly, though
The train works if you're travelling light. Victoria to Lewes plus the shuttle is cheaper and fine, solo, in trainers, without a hamper. In black tie with a picnic for four, it stops being fine.
The weather owns the lawn. Roughly one evening in four, the picnic happens under cover or in the car park, marquee-style. We plan for it; you should expect it.
Don't book us for the shortest operas. A 6:30 curtain with one short interval barely needs the full treatment; a straightforward return transfer is cheaper and we'll tell you so.
